How to Prepare Perfect Matcha
Follow these simple steps to create the perfect cup of matcha tea
What You'll Need
- 2 teaspoons (2g) ceremonial grade matcha powder
- 2-3 oz (60-90ml) hot water (70-80°C / 158-176°F)
- Bamboo whisk (chasen) or electric frother
- Fine mesh sifter
- Matcha bowl (chawan) or wide cup
Sift the Matcha
Using a fine mesh sifter, sift 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into your bowl. This removes any clumps and ensures a smooth texture.
Heat the Water
Heat water to 70-80°C (158-176°F). Water that's too hot will make the matcha bitter. Let boiling water cool for 5-10 minutes.
Add Small Amount of Water
Pour jus t1-2 tablespoons of the hot water into the bowl with the matcha powder. This creates a paste that's easier to whisk.
Create a Smooth Paste
Using your bamboo whisk or spoon, mix the matcha and water into a smooth, lump-free paste. Work out any remaining clumps.
Add Remaining Water
Gradually add the remaining hot water (about 2oz total) to the paste. Pour slowly to maintain the smooth consistency.
Whisk to Perfection
Whisk vigorously in a rapid W or M motion for 15-20 seconds until the surface is frothy and no powder settles at the bottom. Enjoy immediately!
