What is Matcha?

Matcha is finely ground green tea made from shade-grown leaves, a process that enhances its vibrant colour, rich umami, and nutrient profile. Harvested only a few times a year, the leaves are carefully steamed, dried, and stone-milled into a delicate, velvety powder.

How to Prepare Perfect Matcha

Follow these simple steps to create the perfect cup of matcha tea

What You'll Need

  • 2 teaspoons (2g) ceremonial grade matcha powder
  • 2-3 oz (60-90ml) hot water (70-80°C / 158-176°F)
  • Bamboo whisk (chasen) or electric frother
  • Fine mesh sifter
  • Matcha bowl (chawan) or wide cup
1

Sift the Matcha

Using a fine mesh sifter, sift 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into your bowl. This removes any clumps and ensures a smooth texture.

2

Heat the Water

Heat water to 70-80°C (158-176°F). Water that's too hot will make the matcha bitter. Let boiling water cool for 5-10 minutes.

Pro tip: Test the temperature by dropping a small amount on your wrist - it should feel warm, not hot.
3

Add Small Amount of Water

Pour jus t1-2 tablespoons of the hot water into the bowl with the matcha powder. This creates a paste that's easier to whisk.

4

Create a Smooth Paste

Using your bamboo whisk or spoon, mix the matcha and water into a smooth, lump-free paste. Work out any remaining clumps.

Pro tip: Use circular motions and press against the sides of the bowl to eliminate lumps.
5

Add Remaining Water

Gradually add the remaining hot water (about 2oz total) to the paste. Pour slowly to maintain the smooth consistency.

6

Whisk to Perfection

Whisk vigorously in a rapid W or M motion for 15-20 seconds until the surface is frothy and no powder settles at the bottom. Enjoy immediately!

Pro tip: Keep your wrist loose and whisk from the surface - don't scrape the bottom of the bowl.
